We are part of a billion-user platform! Yes, my friend, we are closing 2018 with 1 billion monthly active users on IG. It has also increased its source of ad revenue, expected to generate in ads nearly $11 billion in 2019. With these figures there is no question as to why Instagram is the sweetheart of the social media scene.
However, that love can be bittersweet when we get hit over and over again by the algorithm game. As we ask ourselves “why?” I have some good news! Know that brands on IG have a 4.21% engagement rate. That’s 10 times higher than Facebook and 84 times higher than Twitter. Yeah, baby boo, there is still chance to get noticed and this platform is still invested in getting your content out there.
Are you bored yet? Ok, no, no I am not here to give you just facts and numbers I’m actually here to tell you that even though those are the numbers and yes engagement rate might go down as the platform grows you still have a chance to put your brand out there, how? WORKING ON IT EVERY SINGLE DAY! Friend, it’s no longer about the algorithm and why Instagram Gods are not showing up for us, it’s about how you are strategizing for the business that will do it for you!
Instagram is there to give you the tools, but it’s up to you to build that strategy and business behind it. Those that succeed on IG or that were able to grow their businesses through these platforms are people who had a strategy, who showed up, who found their niche, their conversations, and their purpose. That is what you need to do in order to stand out in 2019 and in 2030 if this platform is still around. Work and invest your time in your business plan and then implement your action plan on your marketing channels (IG). Let Instagram be what connects with your potential clients, what showcases the product, the behind the scenes of your day to day. All this to get people to know YOU and who is behind your business, your call-to-action to lead your audience to your business but don’t let Instagram become the core and priority itself. You need to first understand your goals and purpose as a business in order to make it work effectively in your marketing channels.
This is why I’m here to share with you 5 business-oriented tactics to fight the algorithm in 2019.
1.- HAVE A WEBSITE & INVEST TIME IN IT: Friend, this is the only platform YOU OWN! Have a website and invest your time in it as much as you do posting and scrolling on your social platforms. This is the only platform you have 100% control over and the only platform where you can truly lead your potential clients, and measure real engagement. Have you thought what would happen if IG were to close tomorrow? All those thousands of followers we were worried about getting every single day would just disappear. But if we invested in growing and leading that traffic to our site as much as we do into our feeds, your purpose of growing a community is much bigger!
2.- TRACK YOUR TIME: How often should you be showing up on Instagram? The answer’s as simple as EVERY DAY! Yes, friend capital letters and all. This is my secret for a successful engagement growth, as simple as this. Show up EVERY DAY, cause again we are a billion user platform, the only way to remind people you are in the game is to invest a bit of time daily to post. I get questions all the time if posting every day can actually seem “spammy,” and my answer is, HELL NO! Friend, a few years back when we all appeared on Instagram’s home page and the algorithm wasn’t an issue, plus there weren’t so many users, then yeah my approach on posting daily would be different. But today, we are 1 billion we need to play for the odds. By showing up every day we are betting that at least a couple of people will see us and that will increase our chances of engagement growth every single day. Now, in order to show up every but also be effective on other tasks that are important for your business track your time online. Set apart 30 minutes to an hour to do it. During this time post, engage, answer back DM’s, comments and connect with your audience, after your alarm hits after those 30 minutes to an hour are gone, close down the app and focus on other parts of your business. Putting time for it and setting my alarm to keep myself accountable has totally helped me. One, I show up cause I have time set for it. Two, I now know when to log off (thanks alarm!) and deliver and focus on other aspects of my business that are as important.
3.- ENGAGE OFFLINE AS MUCH AS YOU DO ONLINE: In order to build a real network in your business you need to show up for your people as much as you do online, offline! Friends, invest time to make your clients feel special, schedule a coffee meeting to get to know them. They are investing in you and your business and/or product so you should do the same! Invest time in understanding what is it that they are truly looking for by giving yourself time to ENGAGE with them in real life. I take all my clients for coffee before a shoot to get to know them, their purpose, understand what they are looking for but also for them to get to know me and feel comfortable when our photo-shoot day comes. Building this kind of relationships make those people that have already met you invest and believe in YOU! These are the people who will then go to your Instagram and follow you and your journey because you’ve connected, they will cheer for you and they will recommend you to all their friends. These offline relationships are what truly matter if you want to measure real engagement!
4.- TEST & TRACK: The best way to see what works is to test it, test as many times as possible to find the content that works and the conversations that matter within your community. Every time you test something, keep an eye on it, track your engagement and response to those posts you are testing to really see if they are something you should start focusing on. Remember creating content overall is time-consuming; you need to maximize your time by playing it smart. By tracking you’ll know what your audience likes, prefers and what your strong visuals and talk points are. You’ll find those talking points and content you might want to bring up and leave those others that didn’t behind. This will ease your flow and you’ll get and see that engagement in both your marketing channels and website grow.
5.- PUT YOUR BUSINESS FIRST: This should’ve really been #1 but I wanted to leave the best for last. Friends this is KEY! Don’t rely on Instagram, the number of followers and likes won’t evaluate your sources of revenue nor your capability as an entrepreneur. Know and understand Instagram measures your marketing presence, not your business itself even if your main source of profit is coming through this platform. If you are a personal brand and actually profit of this platform, know that the core of your business resides in your business plan, your KPIs, your monthly revenue, your investments, your branding, your customer service, your product, your services, your approach to opportunities, and the list can go on friend, so now there is more to your business than a pretty feed.
Can’t wait to see you rock 2019 and beat the algorithm by putting your business first! Make your business your daily priority and social media second, rely on your strategies and goals rather than on followers and likes. Engage offline as much as you do online and most importantly know and believe that you are enough and that a grid and filters don’t define you!
Hope this pumps you and gets you ready for 2019!
Cheers to a New Year filled with NEW and EXCITING possibilities!
